[Session 1] Data Space as an enable for Manufacturing Transformation
We aim to understand how digital ecosystems are being formed in the world of manufacturing and what expectations participants have through the introduction of practical examples. Following a basic understanding of data spaces up to now, this year, we will gain insights from practitioners on the current challenges and difficulties at the stage of social implementation, as well as the approaches to the harmonization of various data space platforms advancing in Europe, which will serve as reference materials for discussions on data spaces in Japan.
(1) 11:00-11:05 Opening
Mr. Michitaka Nakatomi (Management Secretary, RRI)
(2) 11:05-11:10 The necessity of industrial data sharing for future growth
Mr. Markus Heß (Deputy Director General, Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action)
The Speech will outline the importance of industrial data sharing, by forming an international community of likeminded partners. It will highlight important political and industrial achievements and suggestions for collaborations.
(3) 11:10-11:30 Making Manufacturing-X international
Mr. Thomas Hahn (Plattform Industrie 4.0 / Fellow, Siemens AG)
Industrial supply chains are global. Therefore, industrial data ecosystems that are to create new business opportunities must be thought of globally from day one! No one can do this alone – no region, no company, no association. International cooperation is required.
That’s why we launched the International Manufacturing-X Council (IMX) here at the RRI Symposium 2023 in Tokyo a year ago.
The International Manufacturing-X Council (IMX) establishes cooperation with leading manufacturing countries, companies and associations. They are in regular exchange to develop and establish a global network of interoperable industrial data ecosystems using international industrial standards. On this basis, Manufacturing-X will achieve a global reach.
More initiatives, countries and companies will join soon!
Specific use cases are presented that arise from the needs of companies and regulations to improve competitiveness, sustainability and resilience: Product Carbon Footprint, SW update for machines and other examples.
(4) 11:30-11:50 Interoperability within and across data spaces
Prof. Dr. Boris Otto (Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering ISST and Professor of Industrial Information Management at the Technical University of Dortmund)
Data sharing requires interoperability of various services within and across data spaces. Examples are data exchange, data catalog, identity management, and data traceability services. The European Data Spaces Support Centre develops a blueprint for data spaces which consists of business and technical building blocks and points to relevant specifications. The talk introduces data space use cases which demonstrate the need for interoperability, provides an overview of relevant activities, and gives an outlook to upcoming developments.
(5) 11:50-12:10 Industrial data integration use case study in RRI
Dr. Naohiko Irie (Co-chair person, WG1, RRI / Senior Strategist, Control System Platform Division, Social Infrastructure Systems Business Unit, Hitachi Ltd.)
Recently, there has been increasing activity related to industrial data integration both domestically and internationally. In response to this trend, RRI established Action Group 4 (AG4) in FY 2023, conducting trend analysis, use case studies, and future technology assessments. In this presentation, I will introduce the results of our use case studies and the various challenges that need to be addressed to realize them, from the perspectives of user companies and IT vendors.
(6) 12:10-13:00 Panel Discussion
【Panelist】
Dr. Sebastian Schneider (Head of R&D Processes, DMG Mori)
Prof. Dr. Boris Otto (Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering ISST and Professor of Industrial Information Management at the Technical University of Dortmund)
Dr. Naohiko Irie (Co-chair person, WG1, RRI / Senior Strategist, Control System Platform Division, Social Infrastructure Systems Business Unit, Hitachi Ltd.)
【Moderator】
Mr. Kazuo Nakashima (GM, Industrial IoT, RRI)
The panel will deepen the discussion based on the trends in data space both domestically and overseas, as introduced in the lectures. We will deepen our understanding and explore clues for future international collaboration, such as how the grand attempt to form a digital ecosystem is being carried out with different stakeholders, how companies are being motivated and areas of collaboration are being set, and what kind of issues are being faced in the field in social implementation.
[Session 2] Leaders Dialogue: Industrial Sustainability
In the manufacturing industry after the corona, it is necessary to overcome global issues such as geopolitical risks and aim for sustainable growth. For this purpose, it is necessary not only improving labor productivity to fill the supply and demand gap in the labor market, but also improving intellectual productivity for solving issues to coexist with nature, such as microplastics and climate crisis. Despite these common issues, the interpretation and policies of each country are scattered regarding the awareness of the issues and digital measures such as IoT and DX.
Therefore, we are conducting activities to compile issues and solution policies about labor issues and global environmental issues analyzed by Japan, the United States and Europe. And even if the importance of the issue and the order of solution are different due to differences in cultural background and social situation, we are trying to find common items in cooperation with international coordination as a group aiming for a common goal.
In the RRI International Symposium, experts from each country will introduce examples that are analyzed in Japan, the United States and Europe. In addition, we will discuss issues in each country in digital measures such as IoT, DX, human machine cooperation, and AI applications as measures to solve issues, as well as issues that should be solved in international collaboration.
