1.1 スマートマニュファクチャリングの定義
「スマートマニュファクチャリング」は、IEC/SyC(Systems Committee) Smart Manufacturing、ISO/SMCC(Smart Manufacturing Coordinating Committee)により、下記の通りに定義されている。
“Manufacturing that improves its performance aspects [Note1] with integrated and intelligent use of processes and resources in cyber, physical and human spheres to create and deliver products and services, which also collaborates with other domains [Note2] within enterprises’ value chains.”
Note 1: Performance aspects include agility, efficiency, safety, security, sustainability or any other performance indicators identified by the enterprise.
Note 2: In addition to manufacturing, other enterprise domains can include engineering, logistics, marketing, procurement, sales or any other domains identified by the enterprise.

1.2 何故、スマートマニュファクチャリングなのか
スマートマニュファクチャリングが求められるようになった要因として、以下の背景が挙げられる。
・市場の需要の変化：モノからコトへ、マスカスタマイゼーション
・市場投入までの時間の短縮：市場の変化に即応するフレキシブルマニュファクチャリング
・サプライチェーンのグローバル化：企業や国の境界を超えたサプライチェーン
・スマートマニュファクチャリングを実現する新技術：IIoT、AIなど
